Parkinson's UK, Basingstoke Branch

The Basingstoke Branch of Parkinson’s UK is one of 370 local groups across the UK, run by volunteers, which together support thousands of people affected by Parkinson’s.  Our Branch provides an opportunity for people affected by Parkinson’s to share experiences and build friendships, gain access to specialist advice in times of need, and take part in activities that enable them to stay active and maintain a social life in a safe, welcoming environment.
We have introduced a programme of Information and Support Meetings for Newly / Recently Diagnosed patients. These are run quarterly at the Ark Conference Centre, and expert speakers present the latest updates on research and medication. The sessions provide great comfort for the attendees, at a time when they have recently learned of their diagnosis. They also have the opportunity to meet and discuss with other patients in a friendly and relaxed environment.
The next meeting will be held on Monday 6th March 2017, from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. For further information, please contact Parkinson's Local Advisor, Sarah Robinson on 0344 2259825 or email srobinson@parkinsons.org.uk

Soldiers Sailors and Airmen’s Families Association

This is SSAFA Forces Help. The charity was founded 125 years ago and  is a national organisation dedicated to helping serving and ex service men and women and their families who are in need or distress and have a financial or housing need. In 2016 the Basingstoke branch was able to assist in 70 cases.

Locally SSAFA Forces Help has a team of trained caseworkers who are able to visit ex service men and women and offer assistance in various ways.  Sometimes the need is to replace a piece of household equipment or help with special medical aids or a much needed holiday.  There are many ways in which we can make life a little brighter for people who have given so much for us.

Anyone who has received at least one day’s pay in Her Majesty’s Services as a regular, reservist or national serviceman is qualified to seek assistance from SSAFA Forces Help.

Please call 0118 981 3700 for information

As well as SSAFA being able to assist those in need, we have a need for more caseworkers.

There are 7,000 volunteer workers throughout the United Kingdom and on service bases, there are also SSAFA caseworkers in Europe where there are expatriate communities.

Being a caseworker is a voluntary job to undertake at times to suit the volunteer, qualification is by attending a fully funded residential course and working with other trained personnel.

If you feel that you would be able to give a few hours per week to undertake this very rewarding work please contact SSAFA Forces Help on

0118 981 3700 - We need you.

Support is provided either face to face or by telephone, there is also the opportunity to go on to do further training to support with serious crime.

The Base is a large, purpose-built youth centre which offers a wide range of activities including sports, recreation, education and personal development. The Base has on average 250 members attending each week over 4 nights, ranging from school age Year 3 to Year 11.
Our team includes a part-time Manager, an Assistant and a large, diverse voluntary team (around 12 adult leaders and 25 teenage volunteers), under the governance of a voluntary management committee.  We are a non-profit making organisation and most of the money we need to operate comes from the members’ entrance fees and tuck shop revenue. We also receive a grant from Hook Parish Council.
What’s been happening…
The Base has had a very exciting year in 2016, with many positive changes, fun events and new faces.  We organised a trip to JJs Play Centre, where the children were able to run off steam and even indulged in a spot of sumo wrestling!  In the Spring, Serco apprentices painted The Base to fulfil an element of their community work award, giving the whole area a fresh lick of paint.
Several volunteers and children helped with bag packing at Tesco to raise money for new outdoor play equipment, including a go kart.  We raised £475 in just 3 hours!
For the first time, we held a ticketed Year 6 Leavers’ party in July, involving a red carpet arrival, a dress-up photo booth, ‘mocktails’, chocolate fountain, food, games and disco.  The turnout was incredible, with 100/104 Year 6 children attending.  This will now be an annual event.
