Last chance to see The Vyne’s rooftop walkway

The main picture was taken the day The Vyne’s rooftop walkway first opened to visitors on 13 March 2017. Ten months later, the project is coming to an end and the walkway will close to visitors on 31 January.

The National Trust’s The Vyne in Sherborne St John is coming to the end of its £5.4m project to replace the roof. Visitors have until 31 January to explore a lift-accessible rooftop walkway before this is closed to the public. Work can then begin to dismantle the 41 miles of scaffolding that currently surround the house restoring it to its full glory.

This is the last opportunity for members of the public to leave their mark on The Vyne. In a daily Tag-a-Tile activity, visitors can write a message or draw a picture on the underside of a tile destined for the new roof for a suggested donation of £5. On select dates until 31 January, visitors can also enjoy an exclusive chat with some of the project’s key specialists.

From 1 December to 2 January, a Father Christmas and Friends family trail will run in the grounds and on the rooftop walkway. Visitors can pick up their trail sheet for a suggested donation of £1 at Visitor Reception.

The walkway is available 11am-3pm with last entry at 2.30pm. The Vyne is closed 24 and 25 December.

More information about The Vyne’s rooftop walkway

The walkway has welcomed more than 110,000 visitors since it opened in March 2017. The project has attracted national media attention and even secured prestigious awards from the Association for Heritage Interpretation for its innovative layout in the house taking advantage of conservation in action.

The Vyne’s historical significance and why the project was needed

This Grade I listed National Trust property boasts an illustrious history. In October 1535 Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn came to The Vyne on a visit believed to have changed the course of the Reformation. Today, urgent repairs are underway following a violent storm in December 2013 that caused water to leak into the house.
