Welcome to the Old Basing Village Hall Web Page. Please take some time to have a look around and you will discover a little about our history, who uses us and what facilities we have to offer users of the hall. Use the index, left, to quickly find the information you are looking for.
We are a versatile facility for any type of function. The Main Hall is licensed for up to 300 people and can be used for Weddings, Parties, Flower Shows, Meetings, Badminton, Table Tennis, Short Mat Bowls, etc. The Frank Goddard room is a separate suite for up to 50 people with it's own private facilities.
In order to build the village hall Mrs Betty Holmes M.B.E. (who was chairman of Old Basing Parish Council) changed the covenant on the ground adjacent to Olivers Battery.
The hall was designed by the local architect Derek Kearns and the projected cost was £80,000. Villagers had to raise 25% of this, with the Government Department of Education & Science providing 50% and Basingstoke & Deane providing 25%. Fund raising for the village contribution started in 1978.
The Village Hall Steering Committee formed the hall into a charitable trust. The building of the hall started in 1980 and Mrs Betty Holmes M.B.E. opened the completed hall on the 5th June 1982, as shown in the picture on the left. She also opened two further extensions in 1993 (new entrance) and 2003 (rear extension & Frank Goddard Room).
John Davie has kindly lent a photograph album that records the various stages of build from clearing the ground to the opening party. We have made a picture archive from this which can be viewed here.
We are a registered charity, No: 280006, and the hall is run entirely from the revenue it generates. We are not financially supported by any external body.
We have a steering committee of volunteers who over see the running of the hall.
There are a number of parish organisations who use the hall on a regular basis:
The main entrance hall is approached via a ramp for disabled access. This leads on to a corridor that provides access to all the main facilities of the main hall, e.g. kitchen, cloaks, main hall, Trevor Dyer room, stairs to main hall gallery.
We have a number of separate rooms within the hall that can be arranged in many ways. The main hall can be separated into two rooms, The Main Hall of 60ft by 34ft and the Trevor Dyer Room of 15ft by 34 ft, or both combines into one large room.
Behind the stage is a large storage room for storage of equipment and can be used as a changing area when shows or concerts take place.
Our high level Velux windows on both sides of the hall provide excellent natural light during the day time. Our wooden floor makes for an excellent dance floor. The pictures to the left, and below, show both rooms combined and is set out for a Wedding Party, each in a slightly different way.
Trevor Dyer Room
This room has a bar facility, and there is an approved licensee who must be approached for make arrangements to offer alcoholic drinks for sale.
