At the meeting held on 6th March the Chairman, David Cowling, welcomed 51 members to the meeting at which the AGM was held. Following apologies, reports from the Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and Welfare Officer, a resolution was proposed that the present committee would remain in post until the end of August and then the Group would close. This was because the Chairman did not seek re-election and there were no nominations to take his place. Also, other committee members were sought but no names were put forward. The resolution was carried by a majority vote. The AGM closed with an acknowledgement of all the work done at the monthly meetings by all those not on the committee.

The Secretary, Tony Brazier, gave a reminder of the lunch at the Conservative Club following the meeting and gave details of the Arundel Castle trip on 18th April and the visit to Savill Gardens on 23rd May which still had spaces available. He also thanked Tesco for donating a large number of Easter eggs for the raffle.

Basingstoke NeighbourCare

Basingstoke NeighbourCare LogoOur speaker this month was Peter Robson from Basingstoke NeighbourCare. This is a charity which was set up in 1997 to provide transport for older people who need to attend hospital and other medical appointments, go shopping or attend local clubs and other activities. In return the charity asks for a donation towards the drivers’ costs. The cars are provided by volunteers who pick people up, wait and return them home. They have approximately 50 volunteer drivers at present who are all DBS checked and more are always welcome.

The charity also has a befriending service, a handy person service which can undertake small jobs in the home and three cafes for people to visit for a chat and a cup of tea or coffee. Further details can be obtained from:- www.neighbourcare.com
