One Person Can Make a Difference (Rotarian Sir Nicholas Winton)

Sir Nicholas Winton, who’s life is celebrated in the film ‘One Life’ was an amazing man who saved the lives of 669 mainly Jewish children by rescuing them from Czechoslovakia and from being murdered by Nazi Germany just prior to the beginning of World War II. He realised that if he didn’t do something these children would perish. He wasn’t a wealthy man but he raised funds, wrote letters, cajoled government ministers to produce the necessary paperwork in order to get these children out. He also had to find £50 per child as a guarantee, (equivalent to £3,500 today). He found people to help him and also found people who would take the children in for the duration of the war, and often afterwards because their parents had perished in concentration camps.

Nicholas Winton was a proud Rotarian and a member of Maidenhead Rotary Club for more than 40 years and continued to work for his community. His story came to light when it was publicised by Esther Rantzen on her TV show ‘That’s Life’

This modest man showed how one person can make a real difference. He said ’If something is not impossible, then there must be a way to do it’
