‘He who plants a tree plants a hope’
(Lucy Larcom 1824 –1893)
The Basingstoke Lions Club, a fixture in the town for 55 years, is delighted to report that two more lovely cherry tree ‘hopes’ have been planted in Basingstoke in honour of Her Majesty the Queen’s upcoming Platinum Jubilee, under the auspices of the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative. This time it was at the Old Basing Royal British Legion Social Club.
Club’s manager, Kyle Merritt who has carefully nurtured the little saplings until they were ready for the big outdoors, giving them the love and attention required to take root.
‘Lennie, the Basingstoke Lion’ getting in on the act with Mr. Merritt and Lion President Rex Sinden.
Acquired by the Club from The Woodland Trust, 30 saplings have found homes via the Club in various locations in the Borough, including North Hants. Hospital, BCOT, Audley’s Resource Centre, Parklands Hospital and various schools. This British Legion placement was a particularly fitting tribute to Her Majesty, who has been its Patron since 1952.

Charity donations have been hard to come by in these difficult times but the Club’s motto ‘We Serve’ applies whatever and whenever.
