A New President
There are many social occasions during the year that wives and partners join their men folk who are members of the Probus Club of Basingstoke. For over two decades the mainstay of the quiet summer period has been their summer pub lunch.
The incoming president has the responsibility of selecting the venue and this year Alex Marianos, a retired civil engineer, chose the Longbridge Mill on the A33 at Sherfield on Loddon. A few eager beavers arrived a little before the appointed time and had to wait in the baking sun until the door was opened spot on noon. It was a good decision for many to come dressed as though the lunch was a BBQ on a beach.
A special area had been arranged in the hostelry for the party of twenty-nine, which had a range of six different sized tables. Then came the usual problem of deciding on what to drink and eat from the extensive choices available. Some managed three courses and coffee while others settled with two courses and no coffee, but a very pleasant time was had by all.
Mayor and Mayoress
And it was good to see member Paul Miller with his wife Sandra enjoying a meal with friends, giving them a break away from their official duties as the mayor and mayoress of Basingstoke & Deane BC.
