Surprising Cavalier Road pond find

I was just cleaning the water rill which feeds into our pond, glanced down into the pond and was very surprised to see a grass snake curled up in the sun on top of emerging water forget-me-not plants!  I quickly dashed to pick up my iPad, crept up to the pond again and took some photos … I disturbed it, of course, but it quickly slid under our footbridge and was quite long, probably getting on for a metre.  Really great to see, but I do hope it doesn’t make a meal of our newts.

If you zoom into the photos you can see the marking behind the head.  It very soon moved so I just hoped they would come out.
