On Sunday 17th May, the Friends of St Mary’s Church held their third Children’s Sports Day. The weather started out badly and we thought we would have to cancel, but organiser of the event Ashley Pither, ever optimistic in his shirtsleeves, carried on regardless. We would like to thank all those brave children who came along from St Mary’s Junior School and the Infant School, and especially Marion in the Junior School Office for arranging the use of the school’s sports equipment. All Ashley’s helpers were cheerfully enthusiastic as were all the children’s parents. Sixty children had entered events, but because of the bad weather only twenty-five turned up. Consequently, helpers, parents and members of the Friends Committee all joined in the fun and games. As we had so few children there, our Chairman Sheila Knight and Ashley, decided to give everyone a medal (usually reserved for the winners) and a certificate (ably distributed by young Thomas, who could not take part in the fun because of a recent knee operation). In spite of the weather, we sold duck numbers for the Duck Race, to be held in July, and had a few takers for the ‘Guess the number of Ducks in a Jar’. Thanks to Ashley and his family and the Beadle family for organising such an enjoyable afternoon.
