Autumn Finches and Ladybirds – Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust

Look carefully in the hedgerows and along the treeline this autumn, and you might notice flocks of small birds twittering and squabbling as they fly from branch to branch. As quickly as you notice them, this flock will disappear, flying as one into the distance. Finches, in particular, flock in autumn and winter, with species including goldfinch, linnet, brambling and siskin all coming together at this time of year. Read More

B&DBC – Garden waste collections suspended due to HGV driver shortage

Owing to the national HGV driver shortage, garden waste collections are to be temporarily suspended in Basingstoke and Deane to protect the core household waste and recycling collections. The council’s waste and recycling contractor Serco has made every effort to attract drivers, by offering increased salaries and enhanced benefits packages, with some applicants currently being recruited or trained. But a number of driver vacancies are still not yet filled. Read More

The Disability Forum – Difficulty living in online world?

Basingstoke District Disability Forum is a charity supporting disabled people in Basingstoke.  We are seeing a sharp increase in the digital divide, of older people and those with a disability being ‘left behind’.  Basingstoke & District Disability Forum (BDDF)‘s services are all free and available to anyone with a disability, visible or invisible. Basingstoke Dean Rotary, Haiti Earthquake, Shelterbox, Festival of transport and Xmas shoebox appeal

Throughout its history, Haiti has suffered hurricanes and earthquakes. Recently in 2010, 2018 & again on 14 August this year, when a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, leaving significant damage and over 2,000 dead. Buildings were flattened and hospitals already under strain from COVID-19 are overwhelmed and many are homeless. Read More..

Civil Service Retirement Fellowship

There were 44 members and 2 visitors at the meeting on 1st September who were welcomed by the Chairman, David Cowling. David then gave apologies for those unable to attend. Probus Doing Business In 1980s Russia

Probus Club member, Richard Stettner, spoke about finding export customers for specialised paper made by Basingstoke company, Wiggins Teape. This material, produced at their mill at Stonehaven, Aberdeen was used by other companies as the base for the manufacture of imitation leather used in automotive, clothing, shoes and upholstery.
