Winners all round!

We had a fantastic day for our annual Tennis Championship Finals’ Day on Saturday 4 September with 22 competitors and around 40 spectators who were treated to some entertaining and hard-fought tennis, as well as tea and various cakes!

Finals were contested in the men’s and ladies’ singles, men’s and ladies’ doubles, mixed doubles and handicapped men’s and ladies’ doubles where special scoring gives the weaker pair an equal chance of winning.

It was great to see some of our younger members getting into the finals for the first time at the age of 18 and some of the other players still making the finals in their 70s. Also, it was lovely that mum and son and dad and lad partnerships and new members of the club won trophies too.

For some players being in two or more finals made for an exhausting day although they were helped by perfect playing conditions of warmth and no sun or wind to move the ball around.

The freshly polished silver trophies, some first won in 1931 were presented by Club Chair Nigel Hatt who thanked everyone for taking part in the whole tournament which ran over several weeks and was delighted that so many people had come along to enjoy the day. He also commented that as there was no competition last year due to the pandemic, the only other time that no play had happened for a year or two was during the war!

Following the presentation of trophies, everyone enjoyed a sociable evening around the barbeque overlooking the bright red and green newly painted and resurfaced courts which are fantastic to play on.

The club has also now got two tennis coaches, Ben Jubin and Steph Catlin who provide group and individual drills and lessons for both adults and children at weekends and during the week.
