Basingstoke & Deane Rotary

Basingstoke Festival of Transport, run by us, requires a lot of careful planning but also relies on an army of nearly 90 amazing volunteers who work with us on the day to make this event happen. They helped us set up, park up the vehicles, sell programmes and a host of other jobs. We would like to take the opportunity of saying A HUGE THANKS to our volunteers. A talk by Colin Pawson titled “The Tootler” in which a history of stage coach transport through the ages was given. At the beginning it was expensive, dangerous and uncomfortable. Great Wolf Resorts explores bringing an indoor water park resort to Basingstoke A major US-based leisure operator has expressed interest in bringing an indoor water park resort to Basingstoke, as one of the first in the UK.
The proposed concept of an indoor water park resort was discussed in a meeting on Tuesday 7th March, as Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s Cabinet considers whether to progress formal negotiations with Great Wolf Resorts to sell Basingstoke Golf Centre as a location for the development. …

Rotary Roundup for April 2023 Sunday Saturday 18th February saw Rotarians in Basingstoke and friends of Rotary in Festival Place collecting to help Turkey and Syria after the devastating earthquake. The speaker at the latest meeting of the Probus Club of Basingstoke, Paul Stickler, is a retired detective, an FBI graduate, with degrees in history and criminology and is working towards a history PhD. The Chairman, David Cowling, wished everyone a Happy New Year and then proceeded to give an update on the upcoming trips planned for the year. u3a – Exhibition Planning

Some of our u3a members like to join up to learn about art and art history in their group. But other members have a creative side they want to explore. So when Festival Place offered us exhibition space after Christmas, our Art 4 All and Art & Craft groups leapt at the chance to start working for it together. The date has yet to be set, but watch for us in the town centre and drop in to say hello if you’ve a creative side to explore too!   Read More…

You may well have heard in the news that being able to access GP services is mentioned as a concern. At Chineham, although the practice remains under significant pressure, the practice team is working hard to support everyone. Currently more than 400 people have appointments every day.  As the practice population continues to grow new additional are staff joining the team. Civil Service Retirement Fellowship

Our speaker this month was Paul Whittle who gave a very wintery talk titled ‘Train to the Arctic Circle’ detailing the trip he had made to Norway in February in the midst of the snow season. The country has a total area of 385,207 square kilometres and a population of about 5.5 million with an extensive coastline, facing the North Atlantic Ocean and the Barents Sea and shares a long eastern border of 1619 kms with Sweden and has only been an independent country since 1905. The President of the Probus Club of Basingstoke, Alex Marianos, has reviewed the first half of his year of office and looks forward to 2023.  Alex explained, “Probus is the social club for retired professional and business managers that have regular meetings with guest speakers on a variety of subjects. Although the Basingstoke Probus Club is for men and has been running for over forty-four years, there is a Ladies’ Probus Club in the town that has its thirtieth anniversary in 2023.”  Read More…
