News from your local Prostate Cancer Support Group
It was with sadness chairman Keith Jones advised the Support Group of Dr Steve Alan’s hospitalisation, and thus his inability to come as our speaker at the October Group meeting.
However, the spot was admirably filled by the chairman himself, who had prepared a very informative outline of the new resource for those affected by prostate cancer. He started off by explaining that this interactive website set up by the highly respected ‘Prostate Cancer Research’ organisation was aimed at providing information not otherwise easily available elsewhere, and in a much more appropriate form for most people.
Keith went on to show how the site fulfilled its aims of covering the entire pathway, in a digital form but with graphics in almost cartoon form; videos are inserted at each stage for clarification; patient experiences – whilst recognising all of us are different, so aiming to be a more universal and culturally diverse site than others currently available. Perhaps uniquely it also helps men to identify possible trials that might be appropriate to consider applying to participate in. In addition, it provides help with identifying other available services – for example acupuncture, a service some member confirmed they had found very helpful.
Each stage of the site is accompanied with a video, with the audio part also shown as text, and provides a good basis for informed discussions with clinicians particularly when selecting the optimum treatment. The site is good in its discussion about the side effects of the different treatments, and how these might be mitigated or better handled – these side effects are often covered with useful graphics helping to give a better understanding of the forms of help and how they work, and where to go for further advice and support.

Another highlight of the monthly get togethers had to be the generous portions of 10th Anniversary cake.
