Sandham Memorial Chapel – Cool Autumn

Autumn – Perfectly cool days for a visit to Sandham Memorial Chapel

After the heat of summer, the cool days, and the low autumn light are the perfect time to view the painting by Sir Stanley Spencer. The chapel solely relies on natural light, but as the harsh summer sun gives way to the soft, glowing illumination, it allows us to open the blinds fully. This showcases Spencer’s gentle tones and his eye for detail, including the many textures in his work. This will be highlighted this year, as our conservators have spent some time dusting the paintings, so it is now the perfect time so see these amazing works of art.

More about the Paintings

Visit on the 10th October and the 1st November for an opportunity to learn more about the paintings, as our chapel stewards share their knowledge to deep dive into the history and meaning of Spencer’s murals. The talks last around 15 minutes, which is followed by a reading of First World War poetry. Visitors often find this a moving experience.

An additional ‘Stanley Walk’

Due to its popularity, we are offering an additional ‘Stanley Walk’ around Burghclere on the 23rd October at 10.30. It is a circular, 2.5 mile walk, which takes in many of the views and places spencer found inspiration from when he lived in Burghclere.

Booking is required, please email; sandhamevents@nationaltrust.org.uk or phone on 01635 278394.
