Poppies Join us for a Service of Remembrance
at Sandham Memorial Chapel, Burghclere on 11th November at 10:50 a.m.

Sandham Memorial Chapel is one of the few National Trust properties dedicated to the First World War, and the only one in this country that commemorates the Salonika Campaign – often known as the forgotten war.

The service will be led by Padre Mark, a volunteer at the Chapel. It is a particularly poignant occasion, as both Sir Stanley Spencer – who created the Chapel’s 19 iconic paintings – and Harry Sandham, brother of Mary and brother-in-law of benefactor Louis Behrand, served in Salonika.

We are honoured to be joined by members of the Salonika Campaign Society, whose work is dedicated to preserving the memory of the campaign and the soldiers who endured the hardships of the Balkans between 1915 and 1918. Many of its members are descendants and relatives of those who served, keeping alive a legacy too often overlooked.

The service takes place in the Chapel Garden, where a sea of poppies created by volunteers will be draped over the wellhead, symbolising remembrance and hope for peace. Padre Mark will also share reflections from his time in the British Army, including the tradition of chaplains crafting crosses from shell cases for repatriation services. During his own tour, 79 such crosses were made and presented to bereaved families.

This year’s Service of Remembrance promises to be a moving tribute – honouring sacrifice, preserving memory, and renewing hope for a peaceful future.
