Upcoming Basingstoke Railway Society Events
Railway history and pictures from around the United Kingdom at this month’s meetings. On Wednesday 12th August Raymond Schofield will tell us about The Great Central Railway. Taking us on a tour starting at the company’s London terminus at Marylebone, Ray will illustrate how a provincial cross-country railway would become a company of national significance, its routes extending as far as Grimsby in the east and Wrexham in the west, with even greater ambitions.
A pictorial show, with photographs mostly taken between 1950 and 1965, will be the subject of our second meeting of the month. On Wednesday 26th August, John Barrowdale will present The Dick Sansbury Collection. There will be a strong focus on Hampshire and on the Cambrian lines of the Western Region, with steam, the first diesels and the early years of the preserved narrow gauge railways in Wales.
Our meetings are at 7.45pm at The Wote Street Club in New Road in Basingstoke town centre, RG21 7NG, which has a licenced bar and usually conclude by 10.00pm.
